Due to the impact of COVID-19 the AFAC Board of Directors made the difficult decision at the June 9, 2020 AFAC board meeting to move the 2020 NFC to a virtual competition.

The regional teams advancing to the National Firefighting Competition are:

Alberta – Maskwacis
Saskatchewan – Morin Lake
Quebec – Mashteuiatsh
Atlantic – Elsipogtog

Components

  • Submission of a fire prevention / public education video based on the 2020 NFPA Fire Prevention Week theme (Serve up Fire Safety in the Kitchen) See the last section for video details and requirements.
  • Video submission of the two drawn competition runs.

Awards

  • All team must register to be eligible for awards.
  • Competition Award – All teams who register and complete the video competition runs and video fire prevention / public education video will win a new set of bunker gear or equivalent amount of specific equipment chosen by the department.
  • Regional winning teams will be provided the following value of equipment: first place team, $3,000; second place, $2,000; third place, $1,000.
  • National winning teams will be provided the following value of equipment: first place team, $10,000; second place, $7,500; third place, $5,000.

Schedule

  • June 15 to noon Eastern July 20 – Teams register.
  • July 17 – NFC two runs to be drawn and posted at 12:00 noon EST on the AFAC website and social media accounts (AFAC will post the manual and runs that will be picked from by June 26).
  • July 17 to July 20 – NFC teams will video and submit their runs and fire prevention video by July 20 12:00 noon EST.
  • July 20 to August 7 – Judging of competition runs and competing Fire Departments will promote their videos. Regional competition awards will include the most viewed Fire Department videos.
  • August 7 – Regional winners are announced; they will proceed to virtual Nationals.
  • August 7 to August 14 – Competition runs of the eight winning regional teams will be judge by the AFAC Board and their fire prevention videos will be judge by the AFAC National Advisory Committee.
  • August 15 – 2020 NFC results announced during the live feed of the 2020 AFAC Annual General Meeting hosted by Prince Albert Grand Council (live feed information to be posted).

Competition Video

  • All registered teams have 72 hours to video their 2 competition runs from the draw times to the video submission cut off times.
  • Both runs will be required to be continuously videoed including equipment change time.
  • Revised competition manual will be posted by June 26 and runs that will be put in the draw will be announced on June 26 (runs that require equipment that not all departments may have will be eliminated).

vNFC Update July 16, 2020

  • Where teams do not have the hose size specified in the drawn competition evolution(s), they are permitted to substitute with another size.
  • Individual team members can be changed up until 12 noon Eastern on July 20, 2020. In the event that changes are made to a team, the captain shall reply to their registration confirmation email with a complete roster of the six competing firefighters.

vNFC Update July 17

The competition evolutions are:

  1. Bucket Target Throwdown Showdown
  2. 65mm, 38mm transition (if you do not have these hose sizes, substitute with what you do have) 

Teams may register to participate up until 12 noon Eastern on Monday July 20

Fire Prevention / Public Education Video

  • The fire prevention / public education video submission is required to be eligible for any NFC awards.
  • The NFPA website and poster below will be required to be part of the video.
  • The video must be a minimum of two minutes and a maximum of three minutes and include one of the following themes:
    • Summary of activity the fire department has completed based on the 2020 NFPA theme
    • Summary of activity the fire department plans to preform based on the 2020 NFPA theme
    • Fire prevention video utilizing the 2020 NFPA theme
    • Any other video idea that utilizes the 2020 NFPA theme that incorporates fire prevention or public education
