The 2020 National Firefighting Competition Went Virtual

This year’s National Firefighting Competition looked a little different from past years. COVID-19 restrictions required a new plan and so the AFAC Board of Directors developed a virtual format for the 2020 competition.

Teams were able to register between June 15 and July 20, 2020. To compete, registered teams were required to complete two components — a fire prevention/public education video based on the NFPA Fire Prevention Week theme “Serve Up Fire Safety in the Kitchen,” and a single video of the two drawn competition evolutions. Of the 16 teams that registered, 7 teams qualified for the regional competitions by meeting both of the requirements:

  • BC – no teams
  • Alberta – first place Maskwacis
  • Saskatchewan – first place: Morin Lake; joint second place: Black Lake and Peepeekisis;
  • third place: File Hills
  • Manitoba – no teams
  • Ontario – no teams
  • Quebec – first place: Mashteuiatsh
  • Atlantic – first place: Elispogtog
  • Nunavut – no teams

The winning regional teams advanced to the national competition. The results were announced during the live feed of the AFAC annual general meeting on Saturday, August 15, 2020.

  • First place – Maskwacis
  • Second place – Elsipogtog
  • Third place – Morin Lake

Congratulations to all of this year’s participants for accepting the challenge of participating in this new format!
