Community Fire Safety Education

Community Fire Safety programs are focused on specific fire safety issues and are designed to increase awareness. There are programs addressing specific areas such as cooking and heating, and programs designed for everyone in the community — Elders, youth, children, and adults.

There are 19 Community Fire Safety programs currently in development with the NIFSC.

101 Youth Fire Setter Intervention Awareness


Workshop to introduce communities that are experiencing youth fire setter activities to the two established YFSI programs. The session also identifies the specialized resources and community roles required to effectively utilize the YFSI program. If the YFSI program resources exceed the community capacity alternative viable option to respond to youth fire setter options are explored.

102 Getting to Know Fire


Workshop to introduce community fire departments / fire prevention resources to the BC OFC Getting to Know Fire curriculum and how to effectively use the program.

103 Learn Not to Burn


Workshop to introduce community fire departments / fire prevention resources to the NFPA Learn Not to Burn curriculum and how to effectively use the program.

104 Close Before You Doze


Close Before You Doze is a public education program designed for all age ranges with focus on closing bedroom doors while sleeping to reduce risks associated. The program was developed by Underwriters Laboratories (UL) and Firefighters Safety Research Institute (FSRI). The program can be delivered by fire department personnel or other first responders in the community.

105 Fire Prevention Week


2021 Fire Prevention Week activities are a public education campaign overseen by NFPA coinciding with Fire Prevention Week (the week of October 9th). NIFSC activities linked National Poster Contest and teacher driven classroom delivered fire prevention and poster contest activities.  

Instructor - Teacher developed curriculum (could be utilized by any fire department or prevention practices). 

106 Sparky in the Community


Sparky in the Community is a community-based fire prevention and fire awareness delivery program using the NFPA Sparky program. Program manual provides instruction on how to use Sparky and lesson plans. IFMS to maintain inventory of Sparky costumes for loan to communities wanting to incorporate Sparky into community delivery / events that cannot afford the resource. 

Instructor - No fire prevention/public education experience required with Delivery Manual. 

107 Cooking Safety


The Cooking Safety program is a workshop or community fire safety program designed to educate adults with safe cooking tips, dangers of cooking-related fires, and basic kitchen safety based on resources designed and maintained by NFPA.  

Instructor - Public educators or fire department personnel. 

108 Heating Safety in the Community


The Heating Safety in the Community program is a workshop or community fire safety delivery designed to educate adults with hazards of heating sources within the home.  

Instructor - Public educators or fire department personnel. 

109 Electrical Safety


The Electrical Safety program is a workshop or community fire safety delivery designed for adults to focus on basic prevention activities specific to common electrical hazards.  

Instructor - Public educators, fire department personnel or community building staff with Delivery Manual. 

110 Smoke Alarm and Carbon Monoxide Installation


The Smoke Alarm and Carbon Monoxide Installation program is designed to be delivered in a workshop format (virtual or in person) or direct support to assist a community or fire department to implement a smoke and carbon monoxide alarm installation program. The program educates involved participants with the proper installation, use, and maintenance of residential smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors.  

Instructor - Delivered by experienced Fire Prevention/Public Education Officer. 

111 Home Escape Planning


The NFPA Home Escape Planning program is delivered by a workshop, school or community fire safety session to educate both adults and children on the awareness, planning, use, and practice of home escape plans. The program is intended to bring children and parents together to discuss the family plan. This program is developed and overseen by NFPA.

112 Senior and Elder Safety


The Senior and Elder Safety program is structured the NFPA Remembering When and is delivered by a workshop or community senior safety session to educate on fall prevention and fire safety for seniors. The program covers senior living, common hazards and prevention, and fire-related occurrences.  

Instructor - Public educators, fire department personnel or community safety champion with Delivery Manual. 

113 Multi-Generation Residence Safety


The Multi-Generation Residence Safety is a fire safety education program is delivered by a workshop, school or community fire safety session to educate designed to educate all demographics living within one residence. The program focuses on hazards associated with multiple generations within one household and combines other age-specific programs using resources from NFPA and other providers.

114 Home Safety Assessment


Home Safety Assessment is an assessment tool used to identify and mitigate home safety factors that are leading causes of fire deaths utilizing a standardized data collection and safety assessment. Occupants are provided with recommendations to mitigate identified and potential hazards and the community administration is provided a summary report that identifies home safety trends and gaps. Data can be utilized to identify communities with risk and impact of fire safety programs.

115 Wood Heat Safety


The Wood Heat Safety is a public fire safety education program delivered by workshop or community fire safety session focused on wood heating appliances safety. Participants are shown how to remove or reduce the risk with their heating units.

116 Wood Heat Maintenance


The Wood Heat Maintenance is a public fire safety education program is targeted towards home occupants and building maintenance staff audience for the proper maintenance for wood heating units.

117 Seasonal Safety


The Seasonal Safety is collection of public fire safety education programs that can be used in existing media platforms or sole delivery in communities. The public education campaigns and resources focused on known and emerging issues pertaining to seasonal fire safety issues. The resources are from NFPA and other providers and are available throughout the year for communities to support their own programming needs.

118 FireSmart & Indigenous Ecology


The FireSmart & Indigenous Ecology is a community safety and fire ecology education program that utilizes the FireSmart Canada program and Indigenous focused ecology to help communities mitigate the impact of wildland fires.

119 Introduction to Fire and Life Safety Educator


Fire and Life Safety Educator is an education program to train community-based members (firefighters, teachers, safety officers, etc.) to deliver fire and life safety programs. It is based on NFPA 1035 and provides the foundation for participants to advance into certified Fire Life Safety Educator programs.

120 Traditional Fire Knowledge


The Traditional Fire Knowledge program is a fire safety education program based on cultural and traditional land management methods. It is based on Indigenous teachings of communities across Canada.
