Torch the Turtle

Welcome to the home of Torch the Turtle, the National Indigenous Fire Safety Council's official youth mascot

The Story of Torch the Turtle

In the heart of Firefly Forest lived a small but special turtle named Torch. Unlike other turtles, Torch had a bright, colorful shell that shined in reds, blues, greens, and yellows, just like the dancing flames of a warm campfire. But because Torch looked different, some of the other young turtles would sometimes giggle and whisper behind their backs.

"Why is your shell so bright?" they'd tease. "Turtles are supposed to blend in, not stand out!"

But Torch didn’t mind too much. Torch had something way more interesting to think about, fire! Not because fire was scary, but because it was powerful and had to be respected. Torch loved watching the fireflies flicker at night, listening to stories by the campfire, and learning fire safety tips from the wise old grandparent turtle.

One day, while exploring the woods, Torch spotted something strange, a campfire left burning all by itself. The flames crackled, and sparks jumped into the dry leaves nearby. Torch's heart pounded. They knew fire could spread quickly and hurt the forest if left unattended!

Thinking fast, Torch remembered the fire safety lessons and sprang into action. They used their strong shell to clear away dry leaves so the fire wouldn’t spread. They called their beaver friend to bring water from the river. They sent the birds to fetch the forest rangers for help.

Together, they put out the fire just in time! The wise old owl saw everything and gathered the forest animals to celebrate Torch's quick thinking.

"Torch, today you saved our home. From now on, you are Firefly Forest’s official Fire Safety Hero!"

From that day forward, Torch held their colorful shell high. It wasn’t just special, it was a symbol of bravery and fire safety. The other young turtles no longer teased but instead looked up to Torch, eager to learn how they could stay safe too.

Now, Torch travels far and wide, teaching kids and animals important fire safety rules, like:

  • Never play with matches or lighters

  • Always have a fire escape plan

  • Stop, drop, and roll if your clothes catch fire

  • Check smoke alarms with your family

  • Never leave a campfire unattended

Wherever there’s a lesson to be learned about fire safety, Torch the Turtle is there to help.

Be safe. Be smart. Be like Torch!
